A redesign changes the design. A careless redesign also changes every URL, and that is where the traffic goes.
The sequence that protects it
- Export the existing URL list before anything changes.
- Map every old URL to its new destination — one to one where possible.
- Use 301s, not 302s, and never chain them more than once.
- Keep the heading hierarchy and metadata intentional on the new templates.
- Re-submit the sitemap and watch Search Console for four to six weeks.
None of this guarantees rankings hold — nothing does. It removes the self-inflicted reasons they would not.
